The Fly Shop’s® Tips: Successful top water angling occurs along the edges of this river in slower, shallow water, eddies and the tail outs of riffle and runs. When nymphing on the Upper Sacramento River, always use double the amount of shot in order to get the flies down to the fish in the faster, bubbly water. If a run calls for one SSG, put on two.

If you’re not ticking the bottom from time to time (yes, this means losing a few flies), you’re…

probably not getting down to where the fish are feeding. Fish with lighter split shot, like a BB, and not so deep in the early mornings and later afternoon to early evening when rainbow trout are off the bottom of the river seeking food. Use stronger tippet like 2X-3X for bigger flies in the #6-10 range, 4X for smaller #16-18. Keep your first fly within 6-8 inches of your split shot. Stronger tippet means fewer flies will be left on the bottom of the river. Sink tip lines with streamers attached are a good plan when there is room to cast.

“make a cast right along that seam of fast and slow water”. Hook sets are “free” so set on any hesitation of the indicator.

I love seeing that moment when a beginner realizes a grab from a fish looks exactly like a grab from a piece of sheet metal. It’s also fun to see students smile when they’re thinking “my instructor just had me land a piece of metal” nice! Hey! We helped clean up The Mad River, that’s gotta help our “MoJo”

The spring caddis hatch is in full-swing. Flows are still low 3,300 out of Keswick and a lot of nice fish are being landed. After a video shoot on the river promoting my other business www.riverpropertytours.com I spent a couple of hours on the river with a buddy. He landed this nice rainbow on the Lower Sacramento River using a tan poopah. If that’s a secret then so is the idea of having your flies down (in the water) when you fish

Had a good outing with my client on the Lower Sac on Saturday. The Caddis Hatch was thick from 11-3pm. The water color was very green about 3 ft. of visibility. We landed 5 fish. And had 1 broken oar

The hybrid oar fix made the fish pic for the day. The fishing should pick up as the water clears. We had most of our success on the Springtime Poopah size #16.
