Winter BLISS or Total Confusion

Between Duck Hunting (a 30 year tradition) with my 2 new labs “Pesto” & “Pasta” and Steelhead Fishing (I’m a newbie) this winter has been filled with outdoor fun. When it rains you can rest assured I’m smiling and in a state of total confusion. Should I grab the rod or the shotgun… oh boy!
A Limit of Mallard and Sprig at Lower Klamath with “Shasta” and “Pasta” (black lab)
A limit of ducks with “Pesto” and “Shasta”. Pesto is on the left. Uncle Joe & Dad on a day where the wind blew 55 mph for 3 hours. 3 boats were lost in LK Refuge that day.
Trinity Steelhead
Had a fun outing yesterday with my Dad on the Trinity.
Landed 1 wild fish on a red copper john #14
.
Also had another grab on the Red Copper John and ended up with 1 fish scale.
Best part of the day was the accumulation of “thigamabobbers” that ended up in a back eddy. I ended up with 5
new “ma bobbers”
Trinity River 2009
I recently fished the Trinity River with a friend and had the fortunate opportunity to cast to rising steelhead.

Steelhead on the Trinity River
The Trinity is incredibly peaceful this time of year. Property along this river is a great value for the avid Fly Fisher.
We had success on really light gear and very natural looking bugs.
I created this fly fishing video of our trip just outside of the town of Lewiston.

Golden Stone

I fished the Sun Dial Riffle yesterday afternoon and ran into a newly transplanted visitor to the Redding California Area from Australia. The fishing was slow and the number of Salmon in the river are limited. I had success on a Tungsten Bead Copper John Rubber Leg size #14 2457 hook. Everything else (I changed flies 15 times in the hour and half I fished) was not successful in generating any takes.
October Caddis Hatch Upper Sacramento River
The fishing has picked up in and around Dunsmuir all the way down to La Moine.
Possie Buggers #12 and micro may flies have worked well for my clients.

This was a getaway day for me on the Upper Sac… take a look:
High Sticking on the Upper Sacramento River
I spent time with Muriel, Robert & Charles Angle on the Upper Sacramento River Fly Fishing for beautiful rainbow trout. This was their 2nd fly fishing experience and everyone “hooked-up” with some the Upper Sac local residents
- Charles working a well oxygenated riffle
- Charles hooks one of several fish
- High Sticking a riffle
- Fly Fishing is a family sport
- Robert Angle lands rainbow from a deep pool on the Upper Sacramento River
Charles and I worked this stretch and managed to land several fish on an assortment of flies: #12 Possie Bugger, #14 Prince Nymph & #20 glass bead micro may fly. I’m more convinced the right presentation is more important than the correct fly. Additionally, the harmony between to the right fly (guide) and right presentation (angler/client) is what I call MoJoBella.
